An action-packed day at the FEI World Equestrian Games saw more medals secured, to see Great Britain sit joint-top of the medal table at the close of the week one events. The Great British eventers signed their world championships off in style, with two gold medals, a world record, Olympic qualification and four eventing athletes in the top 20. Elsewhere, our week two disciplines got their campaigns underway, the all-important horse inspections.

Eventing

In an extraordinary final five minutes, Ros Canter helped to secure Team Gold for Great Britain with Caroline Moore’s and her own, Allstar B after going clear, putting the pressure on Germany’s Ingrid Klimke who had the last fence down, to see Ros lift the gold.

The team; Ros Canter, Piggy French, Tom McEwen and Gemma Tattersall, finished on a final score of 88.80, beating the record set by the British team at the FEI World Equestrian Games in 2010 in Lexington, Kentucky where they scored 92.9.

Richard Waygood MBE, Performance Manager for Eventing, said; “It’s been an amazing day in the office, really great team work. They all pulled together, they all went in there for the team and stuck to the system. It was close at the end, but even before Ros jumped the last fence I knew she had it.  Our primary objective coming here was qualifying for Tokyo [Olympic Games] and our next objective was to win as many medals as possible, and we’ve achieved both goals.”

Para-Dressage

Getting week two underway this morning was the para-dressage horse inspection. All four British horses were beautifully presented, and all passed through the first trot-up of their Games. Competition gets underway tomorrow, as athletes in Grade IV, II and V contesting the Individual tests for the first para-dressage medals of the championships.
