Five athletes. Five championship classes. Five wins.

July was a very special month for the Para Equestrian Foundation (PEF), as all five of our Performance Pathway athletes competing at the RDA Championships won their championship classes. Lily, Andrew, Blossom, Katie and Bethany all topped the podium in each of their classes.

The athletes competed across different equestrian disciplines, showcasing the breadth of talent, dedication and ambition within the PEF Performance Pathway.

While the rosettes, trophies and celebrations are fantastic, these results represent something much bigger.

They demonstrate what can happen when talented disabled equestrians are given the right support, the right opportunities and the confidence to believe that they can progress.

Creating a pathway from participation to performance

The Para Equestrian Foundation was created to support disabled equestrians at every stage of their journey — from therapy and participation through to national and international competition.

For many riders, there can be a significant gap between riding at an RDA centre and having the opportunity, knowledge and support needed to progress into competitive equestrian sport.

That is where the PEF Performance Pathway comes in.

The pathway is designed to identify talent, develop athletes and give riders the tools they need to progress towards higher levels of competition across a range of equestrian disciplines.

It isn’t simply about teaching someone to ride better.

It’s about developing the whole athlete.

That means working on performance goals, mindset, horse and rider fitness, nutrition and hydration, training habits, rules and regulations, competition preparation and the many other elements that contribute to becoming a successful athlete.

Five athletes. Five championship wins.

At the RDA Championships in July, the hard work of our Performance Pathway athletes paid off in spectacular fashion.

Every PEF Performance Pathway athlete competing won their championship class.

Across different equestrian disciplines, all five athletes delivered outstanding performances and secured championship victories.

That is an extraordinary achievement — but behind every championship rosette are months and years of work.

There are early mornings, training sessions, setbacks, nerves, moments of self-doubt and plenty of hard work that nobody sees when an athlete enters the competition arena.

Our athletes have worked incredibly hard to develop their skills, their horses and themselves as competitors.

The RDA Championships provided the opportunity to put all of that preparation into practice — and they rose to the occasion.

Performance is about much more than the competition arena

At PEF, we believe that developing a para equestrian athlete means looking beyond what happens during a lesson or competition.

Our Performance Pathway Clinics bring together a team of experts to help riders understand the different elements that contribute to performance across equestrian sport.

Athletes can work on goal setting and performance planning, developing a winning mindset, coaching, rider position, saddle fitting, horse and rider physical wellbeing, nutrition and hydration, competition preparation and understanding the wider requirements of an athletic career.

We also help riders understand something incredibly important:

They are not alone.

Building a successful performance career requires a team.

A rider needs coaches, support professionals, family, volunteers and people who understand their ambitions and can help them overcome the barriers along the way.

PEF is working to build that team around disabled equestrians, whatever their chosen discipline.

Changing what riders believe is possible

One of the most important parts of the Performance Pathway is confidence.

For some disabled riders, the idea of progressing from an RDA riding centre into competitive sport can seem a very long way away.

They may not know where to start.

They may not know what opportunities exist.

They may not have access to specialist coaching.

Or they may simply never have had someone say:

“Yes. You can do this.”

PEF wants to change that.

Our Performance Pathway is about opening doors and creating opportunities so that talented riders are not held back simply because they don’t know how to take the next step.

The success of our athletes at the RDA Championships shows exactly why this work matters.

These riders aren’t just winning classes.

They are demonstrating what is possible when disabled equestrians are given the opportunity to develop, compete and perform across different equestrian disciplines.

The journey doesn’t stop at the RDA Championships

Winning a championship class is a fantastic achievement — but for our athletes, it is another milestone rather than the destination.

The ambition of the PEF Performance Pathway is to help riders continue progressing through the levels of competition and, for those with the ability and ambition, towards national and international competition.

That journey takes time.

It takes investment.

It takes specialist support.

And it takes a community of people willing to get behind these athletes.

PEF is committed to providing that support.

Help us build the next generation of para equestrian athletes

The success of our Performance Pathway athletes at the RDA Championships is something we are incredibly proud of.

But perhaps the most exciting part is what comes next.

There are more talented disabled riders waiting for their opportunity.

More athletes who could progress further with the right coaching.

More riders who simply need someone to show them that a competitive future is possible.

The Para Equestrian Foundation exists to help make that future a reality.

From first steps in the saddle to championship podiums, we want to create a pathway where every disabled equestrian can discover just how far they can go.

And if July has shown us anything, it is this:

The future of para equestrian sport is incredibly exciting.

Five athletes. Five championship classes. Five wins.

And this is only the beginning.
